Description:
A firmware issue has been identified that affects a small quantity of Seagate® Barracuda® hard
drive models, which may result in data becoming inaccessible after a power-off/on operation.
Products:
Barracuda 7200.11, Barracuda ES.2 SATA, Maxtor® DiamondMax® 22.
Initial Assessment:
Seagate analysis currently shows:
• The Annualized Return Rate for this issue is less than 0.3% for Desktop product and
significantly less for Business Critical/High Availability applications. Despite this issue, these
products are operating within or better than their specified reliability ratings.
• There is no known data loss associated with this issue – for drives which experience this
issue, data remains on the drive and will be accessible once drive functionality has been
restored.
• All Standard OEM and Channel Drives manufactured after Dec 19
th
2008 are not susceptible
to this issue.
• All other OEM -Specific configurations manufactured after Jan 12
th
2009 are also exempt from
this issue.
Proposed Solution:
Based on the low risk as determined by an analysis of actual field return data, Seagate believes
that the affected drives can be used as is. However, as Seagate is committed to customer
satisfaction, a firmware update is also available on Seagate’s website.
